If you've been following our progress you'll know that we delivered the first exemplar service into public beta Motor traders: tell DVLA about the sale of a vehicle on 20 January 2015. Yesterday, we delivered our second; the Personalised Registration (PR) exemplar Take a Registration Number off a Vehicle which became available on GOV.UK as a beta service.
Brilliant achievement
This marks a brilliant achievement for DVLA in meeting the Red Tape Challenge and delivering another service our customers have wanted.
This new service allows keepers and the motor trade to apply to retain a number online. It’s cheaper too as we reduced the cost from 9 March so it now costs only £80. The retention period has also been extended to 10 years with the online service being quicker so more good news for customers.
Feedback
Feedback received so far is extremely positive with the majority commenting on how quick and easy the service is.

Just used the new service to remove a number plate (aka retention) and it couldn’t be easier - very impressed! It’s so refreshing to have an online service become available on the day it was scheduled to go live and work exactly as expected - especially a government department! Well done everyone at DVLA 🙂

Was so easy to do, got retention certificate number within seconds.
Next steps
On 23 March, the follow-up PR service to allow customers to put their personalised registration number onto a vehicle went into the private beta phase. Together with retain, this will allow a customer to change the registration number between vehicles all online, without the need to send any paperwork to DVLA. This will go into public beta on GOV.UK later this year.
We'll continue to make future enhancements to services based on the feedback provided by our customers. Also, the team here at DVLA would like to thank all those involved in helping us test the services and in particular those involved in the private beta testing phases – we couldn’t have done it without you.
